The Durham Sports Commission is a private, not-for-profit organization operated by Discover Durham to promote and market Durham County as a sports destination. The commission recruits sporting events and activities through business development programs, as well as, works to increase the capacity of local events to enhance economic impact and maximize utilization of facilities in Durham County.

The Sports Communication Intern reports to the DSC's Senior Manager of Events and Operations. In their absence, the Intern will report to the DSC's Executive Director. This position will assist in the marketing efforts of the DSC and will work within the marketing plan for two events; along with operational and service tasks for a variety of DSC supported events. The position is 10-20 hours a week, with some work being completed at night or on weekends. The schedule is negotiable.

This is a spring and summer internship, with flexible hours from January-April and heavier hours for May and June.  This event will work closely on two events: 2019 ACC Baseball FanFest in May & June 2019 for USATF Youth Outdoor National Championship


Position Details/Scope

There are four (4) primary job functions of the Sport Services and Communication Intern, including, but not limited to, the following:

  1. Assist in social media efforts
  2. Assist in updating community calendars and DSC website with events
  3. Assist in providing services for DSC events.
  4. Assist in the operation and preparation of the 2019 ACC Baseball FanFest & 2019 USATF Youth Outdoor National Championship.


Specific Responsibilities

  • Assist DSC staff in monitoring and posting on DSC social networks
  • Attend DSC sporting events and promote socially
  • Track social media and website metrics
  • Work with Discover Durham Marketing team on updating the DSC website
  • Periodically update DSC events on the DSC event calendar, DD event calendar and SportsNC calendar
  • Assist staff in servicing of DSC events
  • Assist in the operation and preparation of the 2019 ACC Baseball FanFest & 2019 USATF Youth Outdoor National Championship.
  • Assist With other projects as needed


Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills, including knowledge and usage of social media
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs
  • At least one year of experience in sports, specifically in event operations or sports marketing.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in an event environment that may require lifting and/or moving heavy objects of 50 lbs. or more
  • Availability to work through June 2019
