The Durham Convention & Visitors Bureau is Durham's marketing agency, helping draw nearly 16 million leisure visitors and business travelers to this vibrant, eclectic destination last year. We're looking for an ambitious and experienced Creative Director to guide our brand and creative product, bringing even more visitors to our door.

 

Primary Role Objective:

The Creative Director oversees all creative output, including managing agencies, freelancers, and in-house designers, developing corporate and product identity systems, ensuring brand guidelines, and utilizing creative marketing strategies to further DCVB's mission.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead and ensure the creation of inspiring, contemporary, and strategic designs for responsive websites, publications, email and advertising campaigns, landing pages, social media graphics, mobile experiences, tradeshow and point-of-purchase displays, presentations, video and other platforms that are continuously improving and support the organization's marketing objectives.
  • Oversee implementation of sound brand management strategies for the bureau and its programs, including how the product (Durham) is represented to visitors. Work with agencies and internal stakeholders to develop a powerful brand presence, and work with DCVB marketing and management teams on programs that increase brand identity and awareness.
  • Oversee creative services functions of the bureau, translating marketing objectives into clear creative strategies, providing creative direction and brand compliance feedback for all bureau campaigns and departments, as well as managing two in-house staff, multiple freelancers, vendors, budgets, and timelines to deliver projects that meet or surpass requirements.

Additional Responsibilities Include:

  • Track and proactively manage departmental resources, ensuring training and guidance to staff around design strategy, creative development, project intake and prioritization, resource estimation, stakeholder alignment, service delivery, and other areas as needed.
  • Oversee creative development, budget, and timelines of publications, websites, videos, campaigns, and other marketing projects.
  • Work cross-functionally with internal clients to outline needs, conduct user research, oversee development of creative briefs, and propose creative solutions that ensure brands are represented and supported effectively in all bureau communications.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • 7+ years' experience in design and art direction showing increasing responsibilities, including 2+ years' experience managing creative functions, projects, and teams.
  • Ability to grasp new concepts and technologies and evaluate applicability to innovative marketing strategies.
  • Ability to use analytics to assess performance and identify opportunities for growth.
  • Communication and presentation skills, including the ability to pitch and 'translate' design and marketing concepts to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Expert level knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, UX concepts and terminology, HTML/CSS coding and troubleshooting, and digital concepting software such as Adobe XD or Sketch.
  • Knowledge of software capabilities and other tools under purview, including: Office 365 Suite, marketing automation systems (preferably HubSpot), CRM/CMS systems, Google analytics and AdWords, DAM software, Dropbox, GoDaddy, social media platforms, WordPress, etc.
  • Experience working on a PC/Windows-based platform.
  • Fluent in digital and mobile creative strategies and execution.
  • Flexibility to direct multiple projects and prioritize a variety of objectives for different stakeholder groups.
  • Initiative to solve internal and external customer problems with advanced creativity and a positive, collaborative attitude.
  • Ability and desire to learn new skills and stay current on marketing and design best practices and platforms.
  • Knowledge of Durham's character and culture; Durham residency preferred.
