The Durham Sports Commission is a private, not-for-profit organization operated by the Durham Convention & Visitor Bureau to promote and market Durham County as a sports destination. The commission recruits sporting events and activities through business development programs, as well as, works to increase the capacity of local events to enhance economic impact and maximize utilization of facilities in Durham County.


The Operations & Services Intern reports to the DSC Sports Services Manager. This position will assist in the operations of the 2019 ACC Baseball Fan Fest and the 2019 USATF Youth Outdoor National Championship, as well as servicing events the DSC Board of Directors has provided grants to throughout the year. The position will work 40+ hours a week, with some work being completed at night or on weekends. This position is not available for overtime compensation. The position is for a one-year appointment starting July 16, 2018 (start date is negotiable).


Position Details/Scope


There are four (4) primary job functions of the Operations & Services Intern, including, but not limited to, the following:


  1. Oversee the operation of the 2019 ACC Baseball Fan Fest
  2. Assist in the operation of the 2019 USATF Youth Outdoor National Championship
  3. Assist in servicing all events the DSC distributes grant funding to throughout the year
  4. Assist in the collection of all data needed to recap the serviced events


Specific Responsibilities


  • Work with local businesses to procure vendors for owned and operated events
  • Create operation and promotional plans for owned and operated events
  • Assist in the recruitment and training of volunteers for owned and operated events
  • Assist in servicing events as contracted
  • Assist staff in the collection of needed data to complete economic impact study for each event
  • Assist the Sports Services Manager in the execution of the DSC social media efforts for grant approved events
  • Assist the marketing team in the execution of marketing plans for owned and operated events
  • Assist with other projects as needed by staff


Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree required preferably in Sports Marketing, Sports Administration, Hospitality and Tourism, Communications, or other related field
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs
  • At least one-year experience in sports, specifically in event operations
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
