The Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau is Durham's marketing agency, helping draw nearly 10 million tourists and business travelers to our vibrant, eclectic city last year. Durham is an exciting place to be, and we are looking for an Associate Art Director - Digital to help us spread the word.

Primary Role Objective:

The Associate Art Director - Digital is primarily responsible for concepting and designing innovative, strategic, and on-brand digital experiences that showcase Durham to prospective visitors, meeting and event planners, and other audiences. The ideal candidate has a passion for storytelling through design, and background in implementing ideas into engaging, interactive user experiences.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design cutting edge and attractive emails and landing pages, create motion graphics/gifographics, edit videos, deliver rapid prototypes, and engage in user testing to optimize campaign creative. Apply lessons learned to future creative efforts.
  • Serve as lead digital designer on UX projects and several campaigns per year. Work with VP, Brand + Creative and external agencies to develop and implement brand and creative standards for each campaign.
  • Work with internal clients to outline needs, conduct user research, oversee development of creative briefs, and propose innovative digital solutions that meet brief requirements.
  • Lead discussions and explorations around new user experience technologies, and manage rollout of UX projects and implementation of design and UX technologies.

Additional Responsibilities Include:

  • Create custom templates for emails, landing pages, presentations, maps, infographics, social media graphics, and other uses, and train staff on using them.
  • Oversee photographers and freelance vendors in support of marketing objectives, including web, app, and UX developers, freelance designers, and other technical vendors as needed.
  • Lead overhaul of Digital Asset Management system to a new platform providing better user experience and supporting video and motion graphic assets. Support stakeholder usage of new DAM as needed.
  • Serve as in-house UX consultant and subject matter expert, assisting other staff with making their presentations and communications more visual and interactive.
  • Oversee technical maintenance of DCVB and DSC website and other online digital assets.
  • Back up Graphic Design Specialist on print collateral as needed.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • 4-7 years professional design experience demonstrating growth in abilities and responsibilities, with at least two years of user experience design, motion graphics, front-end development, or other equivalent digital experience.
  • Excellent graphic design skills and understanding of color theory, typography, composition, usability, user experience design, and their application to marketing objectives.
  • Ability to produce original prototypes quickly, and adapt designs as marketing needs change.
  • Digital storytelling experience, with the ability to translate client needs into innovative, on-brief design solutions.
  • Conceptual thinker who can push the envelope with new designs, pitch design concepts to internal stakeholders and vendors, and still adhere to brand and campaign standards.
  • Strong working knowledge of current web standards, responsive web and email layouts, optimizing web graphics, social media platforms, and digital advertising standards.
  • Experience with and appreciation for user testing, analytics, and interpreting insights into creative refinements.
  • Ability to assess and identify new platforms where skills are needed, and quickly learn new technologies to experiment with while maintaining existing workload. 
  • Ability to coach graphic design specialist on UX concepts and digital design skills as needed.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to problem-solve, multi-task and self-manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines in a collaborative, team environment.

Software Requirements:

  • Proficiency in designing websites and emails using HTML5, CSS, jQuery, web fonts, and a variety of CMS systems, including WordPress, as well as troubleshooting PHP and plugins.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator, Photoshop, XD, Dreamweaver, Muse, Animate, After Effects, or equivalent.
  • Proficiency with video editing software, eg iMovie, Adobe Premiere, or equivalent.
  • Experience in Microsoft Windows and Office, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
  • HubSpot design certifications must be obtained within 90 days of start date (HubSpot access will be provided), including Inbound Certification, HubSpot Design Certification, and Growth-Driven Design Certification.
  • Comfortable working in a PC/Windows-based environment.
  • Additional software and platforms as the market changes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Writing and copyediting skills to support storytelling efforts.
  • Experience with DNS management, A Records and MX Records.
  • Photography and videography skills and experience.
  • Project management experience a definite plus.
  • Prior experience designing in HubSpot, Marketo, or a similar marketing automation platform.
  • Durham residency or familiarity with Durham as a visitor destination.
