The Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau is Durham's marketing agency, helping draw nearly 10 million tourists and business travelers to our vibrant, eclectic city last year. Durham is an exciting place to be, and we are looking for a Director of Content Management to help us create content experiences that drive interest and travel to Durham. Primary Role Objective:

Lead our content development, marketing and management efforts to increase the visibility and recognition of Durham as a visitor destination for multiple audiences. You'll own Durham's "voice" and messaging across web, social media, video, email, advertising, and other channels. We'll look to you to bring innovation and energy to the Durham brand, and communicate Durham's visitor appeal in positive, authentic, and engaging ways.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead content development and marketing strategies, understanding the needs and interests of our leisure, business, and sports tourism audiences, and oversee effective distribution across all relevant channels.
  • Manage our website user experience strategies, and lead an upcoming redesign initiative.
  • Continually monitor and introduce best practices in content marketing to the organization, including, for example, expanding our use of influencer tactics, video, contests, virtual reality, and other emerging formats.
  • Oversee and inspire our editorial team through effective leadership, editing, and coaching.
  • Oversee our audience engagement and retention strategies, expanding our community of site visitors, followers, fans, and subscribers.
  • Interpret analytics to evaluate content performance, adjust strategies, and identify opportunities.
  • Insure the consistent use of an engaging brand voice for each audience.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the marketing team to create effective content for targeted campaign efforts.
  • Manage two direct reports, freelancers and content vendors, and content/website budgets.

 

Key Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience managing editorial calendars and creating content for a variety of media, including digital/interactive formats and video, with a track record of successful audience growth and engagement.
  • Experience managing an effective brand voice for various audiences and channels.
  • Experience managing complex marketing projects, teams, agencies, and freelancers in a fast-paced environment.
  • Creative vision in identifying new, innovative approaches to content creation and marketing.
  • Excellent writing, copy editing, and proofreading skills, understanding of style guidelines, and experience overseeing quality control.
  • Knowledge of contemporary SEO best practices and demonstrated experience directing optimization activities.
  • Ability to represent Durham and DCVB in a positive light in both writing tone and interactions with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive, with an ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities effectively.

 

Education and Experience Requirements

  • MA or BA degree in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • 5+ years' professional experience creating and managing content for multiple platforms that includes websites, social media, email, video, and online advertising.
  • One to two years' experience managing creative teams, including writers and freelancers.
  • Experience and proficiency with a variety of marketing communication tools, including social media channels, blog/CMS platforms, email/automation platforms (Hubspot a major plus), analytics tools including Google Analytics.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of Durham's strengths and attractions.
  • Travel, tourism, or destination marketing experience.
  • Experience project-managing significant web development or redesign projects.
  • Durham resident.
