The Durham Sports Commission (DSC) is a private, not-for-profit organization operated by the Durham Convention & Visitor Bureau to promote and market Durham County as a sports destination. The commission recruits sporting events and activities through business development programs and works to increase the capacity of local events to enhance economic impact and maximize utilization of facilities in Durham County.

The Sports Services Manager reports to the DSC Executive Director. This position is responsible for leading the day-to-day administrative duties in the office and serves as the primary facilitator and service provider for both local and external events.

DUTIES:

Position Details/Scope

 There are six (6) primary job functions of the Sports Services Manager, including, but not limited to, the following:

 

1.Organizational administration and oversight.

2.Volunteer recruitment and management.

3.Oversee facility, event owner, and economic impact databases.

4.Offer event execution support and services for all bid-in events and local events.

5.Assist in event execution for all DSC owned/created events.

6.Support DSC staff as necessary.

 

Specific Responsibilities

 

  •    Provide daily administrative and overall office support to the DSC staff, including preparing key documents for Board and committee meetings. This includes taking and disseminating meeting minutes, updating the area events calendar, managing daily office tasks, and assisting the Executive Director with the assembly of meeting packets and coordinating said meetings.
  • Serve as the lead contact for the volunteer program (Wayfinders) and manage event volunteers to support sporting events.
  • Serve as the key staff member on hotel leads issued to partners and reporting information back to the event owner in a timely manner.
  • Serve as the lead staff member on the sports facility database in regards to updates to listings and new facility offerings; maintain and update the Sports Commission's database of event owners; and maintain and update the Economic Impact database.
  • Serve as the lead staff member with local events in regards to hotel and hospitality needs, collateral material needs, facilitation with partnering entities, attend LOC committee meetings, consulting with events, etc.
  • Support the successful execution of all community or DSC programs in concert with the strategic/business plan.
  • Support the successful execution of rights holders/NGB awarded events consistent with the strategic/business plan, including but not limited to, execution of bid standards, providing collateral material for participants, creating itineraries for participants, staffing welcome table, attending LOC meetings, and assisting in the coordination of site visits.
  • Support the staff in building and executing the social media editorial calendar.
  • Support interns in their work to advance the DSC's mission, as directed by the Executive Director.
  • Perform additional tasks as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  •   4-year College degree
  • 2+ years in the sports events and/or tourism industry
  • Event management and/or hospitality experience
  • Knowledge of sports business and the sports industry
  • Strong organizational, communication (phone/verbal/written), and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with professional tools such as Excel, Word, and Power Point
  • Self-motivated
  • Team orientedAbility to multi-task
  • Organizational skills that will enable the managing of multiple projects
  • Ability to work in an event environment that may require lifting and/or moving heavy objects of 50 lbs. or more
  • Ability to work outside of normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays
