Discover Durham is Durham's marketing and sales agency, helping draw nearly 12 million tourists and business travelers to our vibrant, eclectic city last year. Durham is an exciting place to be, and we are looking for a Public Relations Intern to help us communicate with local, national, and international media.

Job Description

  • Assist Discover Durham's Director of Content and PR with ongoing proactive and reactive media requests--gaining experience with providing research, drafting itineraries, and generating story ideas
  • Build and update national and regional media lists using Cision PR Software
  • Write and edit press releases, talking points, itineraries and other press-related tools
  • Curate a database of editorial calendars for media publications aligned with Discover Durham's mission and target audiences
  • Compile media kits for visiting and interested journalists
  • Conduct background research on editorial leads and interested journalists as well as similar destination marketing organizations' public relations efforts
  • Monitor Durham and industry-related conversations
  • Help evaluate PR performance and manage internal reports

Skills and Qualifications

  • Candidate for a degree in journalism, public relations, communications, or similar.
  • Exceptional writing skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service mindset.
  • Able to work onsite in Discover Durham's offices in downtown Durham

The Public Relations Intern role will be 12-15 hours per week in Discover Durham's offices in the heart of Downtown Durham. The schedule can be arranged to accommodate the student's class schedule. Free parking will be provided.
